Event details

Experience the thrill of a live symphony orchestra, and be immersed in music written for dance, composed almost 100 years apart. Guided by our specialist presenter, this concert will provide an inspiring opportunity to hone your students’ listening skills and deepen their understanding of musical fundamentals and contexts.

Suitable for Years 8 & 9 music classes. Year 7 music classes are welcome to apply.

From elegant dances in medieval castles to raucous barn dances, music has been making us dance for hundreds of years. In Bela Bartók’s Dance Suite, written in 1923, the composer playfully invents his own set of melodies to dance to, inspired by Hungarian, Romanian and Arabic folk music. By contrast, listen to a contemporary piece inspired by the image of analog tape rapidly scrolling backwards, echoed in the repetitive physical gestures of dance.
