From elegant dances in medieval castles to raucous barn dances, music has been making us dance for hundreds of years. In Bela Bartók’s Dance Suite, written in 1923, the composer playfully invents his own set of melodies to dance to, inspired by Hungarian, Romanian and Arabic folk music. By contrast, listen to a contemporary piece inspired by the image of analog tape rapidly scrolling backwards, echoed in the repetitive physical gestures of dance.
